Spotted in NYC: Mk2 Golf on Porsche 928 wheels

Our buddy Tony sent this pic of a very clean and very nice looking 1985 Mk2 Golf small-window car with European bumpers and polished Porsche 928 wheels, which he spotted on the Upper East Side earlier today. Proof positive that the K.I.S.S. theory of VW styling is almost always the best.

You can stumble onto the strangest things in New York

This past Saturday my wife and I were going to see a friend's band play a show, and we got done with dinner a bit early so we decided to stroll around a bit and work off a few calories before hitting the bar. If there's one thing I've learned after living in NYC the past 6 years it's that you can pretty much expect to see anything at anytime. Crazy people, famous people, rare cars, expensive cars, pretty much anything is possible at any time. There are certain things you do not ever really expect however, and seeing the 2010 Championship DTM AMG C Class Mercedes sitting alone in a giant and unfinished new dealership is certainly one of those things. So when we happened upon this only-in-New York scene, naturally I decided to take some pictures....

Spotted in NYC: Mk4 Jetta

Parked just one block away from my apartment, this moody Mk4 Jetta was holding court over the local park. After taking the pic a group of nearby tween girls asked (somewhat aggressively) why I was taking their picture. I assured them I was not, I was taking a picture of the car. They looked at me as if I was crazier than if I had just said I was taking a picture of them.

More often than not, people who live in NYC just don't understand people who are into cars. That's why when people ask me what I do, I say 'computer stuff,' and leave it at that...

Spotted in NYC: E92 M3

The weather in NYC was beautiful this weekend, and I spent a good amount of time out and about on the streets, getting some relaxation in before the whirlwind event that H2O International is sure to be. There were a few nice cars that were bombing through the streets, including a fairly rare (color) Futura Yellow Mk4 GTI VR6...modified too, but I wasn't quick enough with my camera to get a pic before it was out of sight.



This M3 however, was quite stationary, and absolutely stopped me in my tracks. This is a first for the E92 M3. I'm not what you would call a fan of the design. I know it's fast, I know it's capable, but it just doesn't fill me with car-lust like a proper E30, E36, or even some E46 cars. That said, this mean-looking M is perfect. White paint, anthracite Advan wheels, and low-but-not-too-low suspension. This is the sort of car that looks infinitely capable, and like it is actually driven rather than pimped by parking lot racers. Even the future-Mrs WRS remarked about this car...the wheels specifically, which I have to admit are proper. Proper enough that I didn't even comment on the played-out black roof. Whoops...

Spotted in NYC: SLAMMED B5 A4

Walking back from the train last night, I stumbled (not literally) upon this slammed Audi A4.

Pretty classic of the NYC style, as Blaksquirrel and I call it. Obviously a city car, some wear and tear on the edges, but slammed to the ground with some sort of wheels. The NYC Audi is a close cousin of the NYC 3-Series, which is usually even lower, with larger wheels, but also tends to be a bit more rough and tumble. Next time I see one I'll take a snap to show what I mean.

Spotted in NYC: Mk4 Jetta

As I was strolling home to the humble abode that serves as the Wolfsburg RS headquarters I spotted this fine specimen, and was inclined to take a pic. This is pretty representative of a proper street-going VW here in the big city.

There are a surprisingly large number of modified VW's here, and very few people make consessions for the sometimes war-like condition of the roads by keeping their cars modest. This Jetta isn't slammed, but it's got a nice balanced look, and stands out like a priest at a porn convention compare to the average run-of-the-mill cars it was sitting between.

I love the art of the daily driver, because for me that's what it's all about. Actually driving and enjoying your car, because it does little good sitting in a garage or under a cover for its whole life. I was never very good at keeping cars show clean, and I drive my cars too much to worry about stone chips and the like...it's always good to see another like-minded person out there.
