H2O International Part 1
It seems like every year the hype for H2O International is bigger than the last, and it would seem expectations will never be met...eventually they have to be higher than the real thing right? I mean after all, what goes up must come down. But after all these years, H2Oi is still a monster..growing by leaps and bounds each and every year.
I know I always sound like an old-fogey with my 'back in my day' talk, but I can remember the very first time I stayed over on Sunday night rather than heading back to Baltimore after the long Sunday. This was 2004, and Ed and I stayed behind as we weren't too pressed about sleeping at home, and ended up hanging out with Matt Kappen and the G&M crew.
All told, I would guess maybe 20-30 people were still around town. (10 of them being on Boardwalk and 3rd at about 2am) A few VWs here and there, but not many. By Monday morning there were fewer still. The one or two cars we saw on the way out we waved to because well, we were all part of the same clan, and back then it was an elite few.
If I waved at everyone I saw leaving H2O this past Monday morning not only would I have looked like an idiot, my hand would have fallen off...there were that many people. Now there are at least 20 times as many as even a few years ago, when Josh and I would stay over before heading back to NYC.
Friday of this year was pretty much the same thing. Now, it has always been fairly popular to get a head start on the weekend by arriving Friday, but these days it's nuts...people are arriving as much as a week in advance. And as far as Fridays, since most places require at least two night's rental so why not use it? This Friday there were maybe double what was last year...which was probably double the year before, and so on. It's turning into quite the marathon event for some people.
And why not. All told I have never seen so many cars over the course of a weekend. The level of quality is sky high overall, and it takes a hell of a lot more than 2 days to take them all in. It's all come a long way from when the 'Big Ass BBQ' used to be at Jay's house over in Ocean Pines.
This year we had a lot of the old-school NGP heads at the booth, including the infamous Mike Herrmann, Steve Brown, and a few others. Mike was one of the O.G. Club H2O reps back in the day, back when H2O really was a car club, started by Scott Hartmann and Greg...umm...something or other. Old age kicking in I suppose, but I can recall Scott had a Black 95 Golf sport on 17" OZ Superturismos and Greg had a Montana Green 1992 GTI 8v (in full Brit-style), followed by a green G60 Corrado.
Anyway, we headed out from NGP in mid-morning, with a pack of M3s, an EVO, the RS4, Nate Baugher's rear-turbo VR6 Jetta, Dave Baldwin's Mk2 16v turbo, B-rad's A4 and my own humble 2.0, plus Arno's ragingly loud 2.0 Mk4. It was perhaps the best collection of cars we've ever had for the trip at one time.
We spent a little time at the 45th Street Plaza Friday night, after setting up the booth, and things were decidedly more low key than they would be the following evening. Great cars though, especially the Mk1s. Where these cars were 10 years ago I'll never know, but I sure am glad people find these and keep them clean and (mostly) unmolested.
The whole lower-than-the-next guy thing has gotten a little out of hand though. When your M3's front spoiler scrapes the ground when you're on FLAT ground, and you have to enter and exit parking lots like this, well...I think we're into the realm of low-riders more than sports cars.
Purist that I am, I can admit when a car is done right, even on air ride. We'll have to wait for part 2 for the air ride pics...
So yeah, Friday was pretty gangbusters, but I didn't take many pictures. Talking too much and catching up with people I suppose, but that's really what's it all about. The cars are sort of a given, but without the characters behind them, they really don't mean shit.
Part two (Saturday) coming soon...

Classics on the Green: Porsche
Classics on the green is a yearly car show in Richmond Virginia, one which I have been able to make it to only once, but I swear next year...next year I'll make it back. It's a pretty laid back event, put on by some of the British car enthusiasts in the area, and rather than keep it all to themselves they decided to invite other classic sports and foreign cars to the party. Each year a different marque is featured and this year it was Porsche.
When I went it was Ferrari. Never had I dreamed to see so many beautiful machines from Maranello... '360s, '430s, 'F40s, 'F50s, even an Enzo. And so many suffering from the neglect of having never really been driven. I even saw a brand new (at the time) F430 with tapping lifters and what looked like oil smoke emanating from the tail pipes.
But I digress. This year was the year for Porsche, and our buddy Robert over at Lufteknic organized a gathering of vehicles for a display called 'Porsche in white' for the event. He even got support from Porsche of Charlottesville, who supplied some brand new models to add to the display. And although we weren't able to make it down for 2010, Ed over at the Porsche Bus Blog was, and he was kind enough to snap a few pics. Head on over to Porsche Bus for the rest.
I swear we'll be there next year...

Save the 8v - Slammed Jetta Edition
Even with preparation for H20 International totally kicking my ass at the moment, I had to snap a pic of this Jetta today. Very scene, so to speak, but looked great and it's an 8v, so I have to show it some love. At this point I'd say the 8v Mk4 cars are holding up better than their higher horsepower counterparts, but then simplicity is always best.
I hope to have more as the H20i weekend progresses, but it's hard to find the time in between the hours on the job. Rest assured with the new condo on 60th Street in Ocean City proper we'll have some much better shots from the strip than last year. Watch this space....

CTSCC - Tonight at 9 on Speed...
Tune tonight at 9pm EST for the broadcast of last weekend's final race of the CTSCC season, which took place at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah. I haven't posted the results yet (although they're all over if you look) as APR was finally showing a strong hand from the start rather than struggling mid-pack.
The Mk6 took it's first poll position and has a hungry pack ready to take it down as soon as they can. Will the boys from Alabama be able to hold them off? Find out tonight...

Video Post: The Rollgolf
Proof that fabrication skills, free time and a few beers may not always prove the safest combination, but most certainly the most entertaining. My favorite part? Although the When Johnny comes marching home background music is nice, it has to be that this is all being done in what looks like a pretty nice, regular neighborhood, but not a cop or complaining resident is in sight. I need these kind of neighbors...

Edition 38 - 2010
My good buddy Scott aka Mr.Rallye sent over a link to some of his most recent travels over in the UK, including a massive set from the UK show, Edition 38.
As usual the Brits have it down when it comes to the older cars...Mk2 in particular. Building up a really nice Mk2-based car seems to be a bit of a lost art over here in the states, with even the Mk1 overtaking the number of truly notable Mk2 cars.
Not a huge fan of air-ride or 4-spoke wheels, but there are always exceptions.
Love this Easter-egg blue Golf, but love the BBS wheels even more.
Check out the full set of almost 300 photos over at Mr.Rallye's Flickr. He's got plenty more from Worthersee as well, so be prepared to spend a few minutes digging through the options!

CTSCC - APR Motorsport on pole position in ST
The final round of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge begins at 2:45ET today, at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah. APR Motorsport has scored pole position in the ST class with the #91 Mk6 GTI. This is the first time that the Mk6 has been on pole, and the strong starting position should aid them in a strong finish in the ultra-competitive CTSCC. If they can end the season on a high note it should prove to be a great boost for 2011. Check it out at 2:45ET today, live on Grand-Am.com - live timing and scoring plus live audio.
We here at Der Wolfsburg Rennsport apologize for a slacking coverage of the CTSCC. Things have been extremely busy outside in the real world so the time to keep up has been missing from the schedule.

Big fun in Baltimore - ALMS joins Indy exactly one year from now
There was a big announcement from the American Le Mans Series yesterday, officially confirming the numerous rumors that had been circulating for the past few months: Yes, the ALMS is officially going to be making a stop in Charm City USA. The great
Aside from the fact that there have been no Mid-Atlantic ALMS events since the very short liveed Cadillac Grand Prix of Washington DC, Baltimore is our home town and knowing those streets and the environment of downtown Baltimore, it will be a heck of an event for sure. The Baltimore Grand Prix, as it is officially known, will take place over the weekend of September 2nd through the 4th, and will feature the IZOD Indy cars as the main event for Sunday, backed up by the ALMS on Saturday.
The announcement was made official yesterday afternoon, fittingly, at Baltimore's Inner Harbor. The streets to be used for the track are already under reconstruction and improvement, and based on what we have seen it should be an excellent layout, with great vantage points and a supurb backdrop, fitting the world class racing the ALMS is known for.
More as it develops, but if you're on the east coast you owe it to yourself to be in Baltimore next year for this event. We certainly will be.
